Give Yourself Permission…To Shine

Since my hard drive died a few weeks back, I’ve had to transfer all my music to my itunes for my ipod, and in the process, I came across an album I’d had for about a decade.  It’s by an Aussie band called Bachelor Girl, of which, it doesn’t appear that they are still a band, but they’re still good!  Anyways, the song is called “Permission to Shine”, and the lyrics just struck a cord with me:

Hey, what would you say
If I can’t play the hero tonight
Cos lately I’ve been feelin’ like
I can’t get anything right

I’ve been fading into the woodwork again
And I’m feelin’ like I just wanna hide
But guess what
I’m gonna try something just a little bit different this time

I’m gonna give myself permission to shine
I’m gonna shine so bright
Gonna make every head wanna turn
You’re finally gonna see me
Give myself permission to shine
Gonna light up the night
Shine a little of my light on the world

I’ve been crazy
I’ve been holdin’ myself back for so long
But I’ve got so much I can give
Don’t wanna be afraid to be wrong

You know I’m not too good at too many things
But I’ve been gettin’ real good at gettin’ down on myself
But guess what
I’m gonna try to break free from this prison I”ve built

I’m gonna give myself permission to shine
I’m gonna shine so bright
Gonna make every head wanna turn
You’re finally gonna see me
Give myself permission to shine
Gonna light up the night
Shine a little of my light on the world
shine a little of my light on the world
shine a little of my light on the world
shine shine shine

Oh, that’s right
I’m gonna try something just a little bit different this time

I’m gonna give myself permission to shine
I’m gonna shine so bright
Gonna make every head wanna turn
You’re finally gonna see me
Give myself permission to shine
Gonna light up the night
Shine a little of my light on the world

(Give myself permission to shine)
I wanna light up the night
Shine a little of my light on the world

This made me realize that I haven’t been giving myself permission to shine, I feel like I can’t!  When meeting people, I dread the question “what is it you do?”  I feel like as soon as I suggest unemployment, people automatically assume the worst of me.  I never realized how that question ALWAYS comes up in conversation, as if it automatically defines who you are as a person.  I seriously make a conscious effort to avoid asking that question, because I don’t want to be asked it.  I know I’m a great person, and really try not to let people influence my self-confidence, but it does!  I’ve apparently been giving permission to feel inferior, and that’s certainly not how I want to be, but when your life is NOWHERE near the course you thought it would take, it’s so hard not to be discouraged! I think the song is a great reminder that NO ONE determines the way we feel about ourselves, but us!

Do you give yourself permission to shine? If not, what’s holding you back?

Do You Have A Perky Job?

Here’s an intersting article on the jobs with the best perks for employees.  I knew I wanted to go into hotel/resort management for a reason LOL, but not neccessarily for the reasons posted, although they are still VERY nice  perks!

Do you have a job with great perks?  Is that what attracted you initially to your job, or do you just love what you do?  If they were taken away, would you leave your job?

Medical Records…Really?????

Why do we care about the medical records of the presidential candidates???  Apparently that’s the big commotion with the Republicans….Palin agrees to release her medical records!!  I don’t even think we would need to see John McCain’s. He is old, but appears to be in good condition.  Medical records are confidential and there’s no reason we need to have access to them to determine who would be the better leader of the United States of America!!!!

Before I started this blog, I used to have one on Myspace, and just now realized I can copy and paste them, and make it like I posted it on that day LOL, so here are my back blogs:

My New Place, In “La Ghetto!”

Silence Just Can’t Be Golden

They’re Gunning For My Vehicle

Just Call Me “Grace – ful”

Just Not The Brightest Crayons in The Box

There were a few I left out, but only because they weren’t all that important, and I did try to take out as much of the vulgar language (a foul mouth was second nature where I used to work) or tweaked it a bit…there’s still a little, but not AS bad!

I’m Baaaaaaaaaaaaaack!!!!

I just got my computer back today…HIP HIP HOORAY!  Although I lost ALL of my files, I’m kinda happy I get to start over fresh with a new hard drive, so I’m slowly reloading all my junk back on, and I’m wondering where I found all the time to load it in the first place, this is taking FOREVER!  Geek Squad took their sweet time to do the job, but I suppose 8 days isn’t that bad.  Really, they had to replace the hard drive, reload XP on there, and that was it!  I’m shocked they said there were some people who had been waiting weeks, and I’m wondering why they aren’t able to fill the demand, even with contracted employees to help when it got busy.  They apparently are really strict on the employees to not work overtime as well, which holds things up too!  Plus, whenever I had to call in, I’d be lucky if someone from Geek Squad would answer, it’d usually ring so much, a Best Buy employee would answer it, and the one time, they said there’s only one person at the counter, and there’s customers in front of them.  It just seemed like they could’ve done a MUCH better job, I’m not saying I’m the best at customer service, but I know what you do and DON’T do!  Answer the phone, and at least put the customer on hold, so then they know they’re not being ignored!  Sorry for my rant, but certain things just bug me when it comes to the way customers get treated.

Have A Laugh!

Last week, I saw Tim Parsons, from the Big Bang Theory, on Craig Ferguson, and thought he was a hoot!  Although, I was suprised to hear his personality isn’t quite as different from his character on the show as I would’ve thought!  Either way, I was cracking up!

Enjoy!

Dead Computer

Sorry if I’ve neglected my blog,  if you haven’t caught my tweets, sadly, my computer has died.  Well, we’re (Geek Squad, that is) trying to revive it, but until we bring it back to life, I’ve been hopping down to the library a few times a week, and trying to do what I need to.  So, I’ll try to post, and respond, if I can, but I’ll keep you posted on when I’m back up and running!

I’m reading How to Win Friends and Influence People, by Dale Carnegie, and found this excerpt he took from a department store’s advertisement.  I know it’s a tad early to be thinking about Christmas, but if you check out HIS blog, stores are already in full swing!  It’s just a good thing to remember ANY time of year, really!

The Value of a Smile at Christmas

I wanted to share this – I thought it so fitting for the season – and so true.
A smile costs nothing, but creates much.

It enriches those who receive, without impoverishing those who give.
It happens in a flash and the memory of it sometimes lasts forever. None are so rich they can get along without it, and none are so poor but are richer for its benefits.

It creates happiness in the home, fosters good will in a business, and is the countersign of friends. It is rest to the weary, daylight to the discouraged, sunshine to the sad, and Nature’s best antidote for trouble.

Yet it cannot be bought, begged, borrowed, or stolen, for it is something that is no earthly good to anybody till it is given away.

And if in the last-minute rush of Christmas buying some of our salespeople should be too tired to give you a smile, may we ask you to leave one of yours?

For nobody needs a smile so much as those who have none left to give!
